If you’re a cop deciding whether to shoot a suspect, you’re not going to be able to use much but intuition. I will grant that Gladwell describes well the occasions when raw, naked intuition gets the job done (that’s part of the problem - he describes everything well).

My major complaint is that much of Blink isn’t really about intuition, and shouldn’t be parading as such. I say let’s move this sort of thing (as well as the personal finance, How to Marry the Millionaire Next Door types) off the business list and then maybe my books will appear! While we’re at it, any business book with a number in the title (e.g., The Five Dysfunctions of a Business Book) should also be banned from the category as too simplistic for sentient human consumption.

The minor gripe is that it’s usually classified as a business book, but most of the examples and discussion aren’t about business. I have one minor and one major problem with this tome. His Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking is supposed to be a paean to the glories of intuition and rapid, intuitive decision making - Gladwell calls “thin slicing.” There’s one high-profile exception: Malcolm Gladwell. I’ve been gratified to find much corroboration for this argument. I strongly believe that companies building strategies around analytics, experimentation, and fact-based decision making are more likely to win.
